New NSW Fair Trading regulations (introduced December 2025) have changed the rules for new e-bikes to ensure they meet high safety and import standards.
Here is what you need to know to stay road-legal and safe:
???? Is Your new E-Bike Road Legal?
To ride on NSW roads and paths, your new e-bike must now meet these three criteria:
- Power Limit: The motor must have a maximum continuous power of 250W.
- No “Hidden” Speed Modes: If a bike allows you to unlock higher speeds or extra power via a code, app, or “throttle in the box,” it is not legal for road use.
- Safety Standards: NSW is moving toward the EN15194 standard. If your new bike doesn’t meet this, it’s for private property use only.
???? Buying vs. Riding: Know the Difference
Just because a shop can legally sell a bike doesn’t mean you can legally ride it on the street.
- Retailers must ensure bikes meet safety certifications (like UL2849 or EN15194) to prevent fire risks.
- Riders must ensure their bike specifically hits the 250W limit and EN15194 compliance to avoid fines and stay legal on public roads.
